"Tokyo Game Show 2022" (hereafter, TGS2022) has kicked off with the line "Makuhari! I'm back!" With 2019 as the last regular event, 2020 was canceled, and 2021 was held online and in a fairly closed form, but 2022 will be held in real time.

As before, the event will be held for a total of four days, with two business days and two public days. The first day, September 15th, was so crowded that I wanted to say, "Is this really a business day?"

As the name suggests, the Tokyo Game Show is a game exhibition, but the PC-related booths were also active. Here's a summary of the products I found there.

  • What is this GPU! ”—A hidden ball lurking in the GALLERIA booth
GALLERIA, a gaming PC brand developed by Third Wave. The company's booth had this GALLERIA on the front. At the booth, in addition to GALLERIA brand PCs, PCs collaborated with professional gamers are also on display. There were stage events inviting celebrities, etc., and it was quite lively.

                   This is a desktop PC

Quietly placed among them is the notebook PC "UL7C-AA2" under development equipped with "Intel ARC A730M 12GB". Without any explanation, it was placed in the corner of the table, so if I hadn't paid attention, I would have passed it.

"Tekken 7" was being demoed on the exhibition machine, and I tried playing it, but Heihachi Mishima was moving beautifully. The Intel ARC A730M is said to be equivalent to NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3060, so it's only natural that it should run smoothly. After finishing the demo, I tried to look at the device manager, but I was told, "I can't touch there...", so I'm going to wait for the editorial department to come to this machine, which is aiming to be released within the year.

The Steam Deck is finally here and can be played smoothly

"Steam Deck" has finally started to be reserved in Japan. Many people have already made reservations. I am one of them.

What I expect from Steam Deck is that many of the games distributed on Steam can be played on portable gaming machines. There are many game titles that can be played on Nintendo Switch, but games that make use of realistic depictions and 3D screens are superior to Steam Deck, and above all, it is attractive that you can easily play Steam games without a gaming PC.

At the KOMODO booth, participants were divided into groups who chose to play the 20 or so games pre-installed on the Steam Deck and those who played the popular fighting game "Apex Legends". It was done.

What's more, each play time is 15 minutes, and dozens of people are supposed to experience the total replacement all at once, so you can play without worrying about waiting time, so I thought this method was clever. However, it can be said that the wait was not so long because it was a business day. It will be crowded on public days.

I played "Death Stranding Director's Cut" (hereafter, Death Stranding), "Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown" (hereafter, Ace Combat 7), and "FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE" (hereafter, FFVII). Three. It was a pretty tough development with only 5 minutes to play one, but I managed to play.

Ace Combat 7 is a low-load game, so I thought it would be natural for it to move smoothly, but I was able to enjoy the mist generated by the aircraft when it turned and how the missiles flew, which was not much different from other company's Windows-equipped portable gaming PCs.

It was the same with Death Stranding, and I could play it without flickering when I shook the camera. FFVII was the one I was most interested in, but the experience was exactly the same as playing on PlayStation 5. At the beginning of the game, when the train arrived at the station and Cloud mowed down the guards, I was able to swing down the sword at a good tempo.

The Steam Deck weighs about 669g, which is not light, but in a short trial, it didn't feel as heavy as other portable gaming PCs. It's scheduled to ship at the end of 2022, so I can't wait to get my hands on the actual machine, even though it's less than three months away.

  • ASUS JAPAN exhibits a 41.5-inch 4K organic EL display
The exhibition booth of ASUS JAPAN, which is famous for the "ROG (Republic of Gamers)" brand, was lined with PCs, displays, and headsets made by the company. Among them, the 41.5-inch 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) organic EL display “PG42UQ” was unveiled for the first time in Japan. The refresh rate is up to 138Hz, the response speed is 0.1ms, and the maximum contrast ratio is 1.5 million: 1.

At this time, the development and price in Japan are unknown, but it is a model that we are interested in trends.

ROG series laptops are still popular

As in 2021, the company's booth also exhibited products that collaborated with IKEA, and there was also a corner that appealed to the total gaming life.

Evangelion collaboration products are also on display

  • This is also popular! ――The popular MSI booth with crowds
Similar to GALLERIA, the booth of MSI Computer Japan (MSI) was organized as an e-sports event. In addition to notebook PCs, headsets, keyboards, and mice made by the company, routers, motherboards, and graphics cards were also displayed side by side.

The MSI booth was also crowded with people.

A router compatible with the latest Wi-Fi 6E was also exhibited

  • The SteelSeries booth also features newly announced products

At the SteelSeries booth, the company's headphones, keyboard, and mouse were exhibited. Among them, they were pushing the just-announced “Apex 9 Mini” and “Apex 9 TKL”.

The selling point is that the actuation point can be set to 1mm/1.5mm, which is said to be popular with gamers. The adjustment points are simpler than the "Apex Pro Mini", which can change the actuation point by 0.1mm, but it is attractive that it is cheaper.

The gaming headset "Arctis Nova 1" announced at the same time was also on display, and I was able to try the actual machine. It is the lowest model in the lineup of the same series, but it uses the same driver as the middle range model, so I listened to it and it sounded pretty good. Although it will be connected only with a 3.5mm jack, the person in charge said, "We want to appeal not only to PC gamers but also to Nintendo Switch users."

TGS2022 will be open to the public on September 17th and 18th, but general visitors will be able to enter from 14:00 on the 16th, so if you are interested, please visit Makuhari Messe.
