- Analysts predict that there will be performance differences between the Pro and Pro Max on the iPhone 15
In this year's "iPhone 14" series, the standard model and the Pro model differ not only in camera performance, but also in terms of processor. Analysts predict that this price differentiation will become more pronounced in 2023, and that the gap between the "iPhone 15 Pro" and "iPhone 15 Pro Max" will widen.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst familiar with Apple's supply chain intelligence, has reported on the status of orders for the iPhone 14 series in China. Two iPhone 14 Pro models account for 85% of the total, and the 6.7-inch standard model "iPhone 14 Plus" is the lowest, less than 5%.
Kuo also noted that pre-orders for Apple's high-end products are always popular in the early stages. This year's order status has a higher proportion of Pro models than last year, which reflects "changes in Apple's product segment strategy (only Pro models are major updates)".
Apple has installed the latest "A16 Bionic" chip only in the iPhone 14 Pro model, and has diverted last year's A15 (5-core GPU version for 13 Pro) to the standard model. This policy of "different processors by price" is the first in about 10 years. The last time was in 2013, when the iPhone 5s used the A7, while the cheaper iPhone 5c used the year-old A6.
Kuo expects this pattern to continue, with more differentiation to make the Pro model more attractive. He wants to increase shipments of the more expensive Pro model and increase the iPhone's ASP (average price).
Going one step further, Apple "will start to differentiate between the Phone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro." That's "the best way to generate more sales/profits in a mature market with the right product segmentation strategy," he said.
So Kuo didn't say what the difference would be between the Phone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, in the iPhone 12th generation, only the Pro Max model is equipped with a sensor-shift image stabilization function, and there is a precedent for omitting it in the Pro model.
Kuo previously predicted that in the iPhone 15th generation, only the Pro Max would have a periscope telephoto lens. In the case of the iPhone 12 Pro, it was speculated that it was a "compromise" because the housing was small and it was difficult to store the sensor shift device, but next year there may be an intentional difference in telephoto performance between the Pro and Pro Max. unknown.
